Breast reduction surgery, also known as reduction mammoplasty is a popular cosmetic surgery operation that can dramatically improve a woman’s life – both physically and emotionally.
Mr Chris Fenn, consultant plastic, reconstructive and cosmetic surgeon based in Leeds, West Yorkshire, regularly performs breast reduction surgery on women who are unhappy with their overly large breasts.
Mr Fenn is highly regarded in the field of cosmetic breast surgery and in his NHS post, he frequently undertakes complete breast reconstruction or restorative breast surgery on women following mastectomy or other invasive breast surgery.
What is a breast reduction?
A breast reduction/reduction mammoplasty is a surgical operation performed to reduce the size and volume of the breasts. Excess tissue is removed and the remaining breast tissue is reshaped to create smaller and lighter breasts.
What are the benefits of breast reduction surgery?
Breast reduction is a very successful cosmetic breast surgery operation and has many associated benefits.
Women who opt for breast reduction surgery have often suffered from years of physical discomfort because of their heavy, pendulous breasts. Back, neck and shoulder pain, skin irritation and painful indentations from bra straps are all common problems experienced by women with excessively large breasts and which can be relieved by breast reduction surgery.
After their breast reduction surgery, women often feel that their body is more in proportion and as a result, they are less self conscious about their body shape. They are also able to exercise more freely and go about their daily activities in comfort.
Women who have had a breast reduction frequently say the operation has transformed their lives and subsequently they have increased confidence and self-esteem.
Am I suitable for breast reduction surgery?
If you have very large breasts which are causing you pain and discomfort or if you are unhappy with the size, shape and weight of your breasts, then you may be suitable for breast reduction surgery.
If you are considering surgery then the first step is to arrange a consultation with Mr Chris Fenn. After an examination of your breasts and a discussion about your medical history, Mr Fenn will be able to confirm your suitability for the operation.
During the same appointment, you will also discuss with Mr Fenn the size that you would like your breasts to become and your expectations from the surgery.
To ensure that you make an informed decision, Mr Chris Fenn will discuss the risks associated with surgery and will encourage you to ask questions and take your time to think about the procedure before you decide to go ahead.
What does breast reduction surgery involve?
There are various ways to perform breast reduction surgery and Mr Chris Fenn will discuss the most appropriate technique for you during your consultation.
A.The most common method is for the excess skin and breast tissue to be removed through incisions in the lower part of the breast – usually along the natural crease of the breast, up the mid-line of the breast and around the areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple). The remaining breast tissue is reshaped and the nipples repositioned to match the new, smaller breasts. This approach leaves a fine ‘anchor’ or ‘inverted T’ shaped scar where the incisions were made.
B. Another technique performed by Mr Fenn is the ‘vertical scar’ method where cuts are made around the areola and vertically down to the natural breast crease. Patient suitability for this method is dependent on the amount of volume and skin to be removed.
How long does it take to recover?
Performed under a general anaesthetic, breast reduction surgery takes approximately 2-3 hours and involves a 1-2 night stay in hospital.
You may experience a little pain and discomfort for a week or so after the operation. This can be managed with painkilling tablets.
You will need to wear a supportive bra for several weeks after surgery and whilst you will be encouraged to stay mobile at home, you will be advised to avoid strenuous activity for around 6-8 weeks.
Depending on the nature of your job, you will be able to return to work 2-4 weeks after surgery.
You will be asked to return to the hospital for a series of follow-up appointments with both Mr Chris Fenn and the cosmetic surgery nursing team to ensure you are healing as you should be.
